A2-tason oppitunnilla 29 opit tunnistamaan referoinnin: He said he was tired — ja ymmärtämään, ettei was tässä tarkoita mennyttä aikaa.

suora esitys referointi
"I am tired." He said he was tired.
"I work in a bank." She said she worked in a bank.
"I'm waiting for a bus." He said he was waiting for a bus.
"I've finished." She said she had finished.
"I lost my keys." He said he had lost his keys.
"I'll call you." She said she would call me.
"I can help." He said he could help.
"I must go." She said she had to go.
"We may be late." They said they might be late.

Past Perfect, would, could, should ja might eivät siirry: kauemmas taaksepäin niillä ei ole minne. "I had finished" → She said she had finished.

Milloin siirtymä ei ole pakollinen. Jos johtoverbi on preesensissä, siirtymää ei ole: She says she's tired — näin välitetään juuri sanottu. Jos sanottu pitää paikkansa nytkin, aikamuodon voi jättää ennalleen: He said he lives in Leeds — ja asuu siellä yhä. Siirretty lived on tässäkin tapauksessa oikein.

Past Simple: siirtymä on pääsääntö, ilman siirtymää on myös oikein. "I lost my keys" → He said he had lost his keys — näin säännön mukaan, ja kirjoituksessa näin on varminta. Puheessa Past Simple jätetään referoinnissa kuitenkin usein ennalleen: He said he lost his keys. Erityisen usein näin sanotaan, kun aika on mainittu: She said she arrived on Monday. Kurssin harjoituksissa hyväksytään molemmat; jos epäröit, siirrä.

Pronominit, paikka ja aika. Nyt puhuu toinen ihminen, joten I muuttuu muotoon he tai she ja my muotoon his tai her.

now then
today that day
tomorrow the next day
yesterday the day before
next week the following week
here there

Samana päivänä niitä ei tarvitse muuttaa: She said she'd call me tomorrow — jos huominen ei ole vielä tullut.

Kysymys: suora sanajärjestys ja if. Siksi sillä on tavallisen toteamuksen sanajärjestys — ensin subjekti, sitten verbi — do, does, did katoavat, eikä lopussa ole kysymysmerkkiä. Johdantona on asked tai wanted to know.

suora kysymys referointi
"Where do you live?" He asked me where I lived.
"What time does the train leave?" She asked what time the train left.
"Are you coming?" He asked if I was coming.
"Have you seen my keys?" She asked whether I had seen her keys.

Kysymys, jossa on sana where, what tai why, säilyttää sen. Kysymys ilman tällaista sanaa — johon vastataan ”kyllä” tai ”ei” — saa sanan if tai whether: se vastaa suomen -ko/-kö-liitettä (”kysyi, tulenko”).

Pyyntö ja kehotus: to + verbi. Kielto on not to.

suora esitys referointi
"Please wait here." She asked me to wait there.
"Close the door." He told me to close the door.
"Don't be late." She told us not to be late.
"Could you help me?" He asked me to help him.

Could you…? on muodoltaan kysymys mutta merkitykseltään pyyntö, siksi se välitetään rakenteella asked me to.

Vertaa rakenteita asked me to ja asked me if:

He asked me to call Anna. Pyysi: ”Soita Annalle.”
He asked me if I had called Anna. Kysyi: ”Soititko Annalle?”

to-sanan jälkeen tulee pyyntö, if-sanan jälkeen kysymys.

Näin ei sanota. ✗ She asked if I was coming? → ✓ She asked if I was coming.

Testaa itsesi. Miten referoit Annan sanat "I've lost my phone"? Miksi She asked where I lived eikä where did I live? Miten välität käskyn "Don't touch it!"?

näytä vastaukset
Anna said she had lost her phone; referoinnissa kysymyksellä on suora sanajärjestys eikä did-sanaa, koska et kysy vaan kerrot kysymyksestä; He told me not to touch it — not to + verbi.

Suomenkielisten virheet

kirjoitettu omalle kielellesi
1

Aikamuoto jää ennalleen

✗ Yesterday she said she will call me, but she didn't → ✓ Yesterday she said she would call me, but she didn't. Englannissa menneen ajan said- tai told-verbin jälkeen aikamuoto siirtyy askeleen taaksepäin: will → would, is → was, can → could.

2

”Kertoi, että” ilman kenelle

✗ He told that he was busy

✓ He told me that he was busy / He said that he was busy

Suomen ”hän kertoi, että…” ei tarvitse ketään, jolle kerrotaan, ja ”kertoa” tuntuu tell-verbin vastineelta. tell vaatii kuitenkin kenelle: told me, told her. Jos kuulijaa ei mainita, oikea verbi on said.

3

Vaihtoehtokysymys ilman if-sanaa

✗ She asked me do I want a coffee

✓ She asked me if I wanted a coffee

Suomen ”hän kysyi, haluanko kahvia” merkitsee kysymyksen verbin -ko-liitteellä, eikä muuta sanaa tarvita. Englannissa -ko vastaa sanaa if tai whether, se tulee alkuun, ja sen jälkeen on toteamuksen järjestys ilman do-apuverbiä.

4

Käsky suorana referoinnissa

✗ She told me don't worry

✓ She told me not to worry

Englannissa told me- ja asked me -rakenteen jälkeen tulee to + verbi (He asked me to close the door), kielto on not to.

Ääntäminen

3 min

Referoidussa kysymyksessä intonaatio on laskeva:

He asked where I lived ↘. She asked if I was coming ↘.

Se on toteamus kysymyksestä, ei itse kysymys. Äänen nousu lopussa tekisi lauseesta taas kysymyksen — kuullessa yleinen virhe: lause on rakennettu oikein, mutta kuulostaa kysymykseltä.

said ja says: said /sed/, says /sez/ — lyhyellä /e/-äänteellä, ei /eɪ/ kuten sanassa say.

asked /ɑːskt/ — yksi tavu: /sk/ ja /t/ kuuluvat peräkkäin ilman vokaalia välissä.

that on referoinnissa painoton: He said that he was tired — /ðət/, lähes huomaamaton.

Yesterday I rang the shop about my missing order. The receptionist said that the manager was in a meeting and asked if I wanted to leave a message. I told her that I had sent two emails the week before and that nobody had answered.

She said she was very sorry and asked me what my order number was. Then she asked whether I had paid by card or by bank transfer. I told her that I had paid by card on the first of the month. She said the parcel had left the warehouse ten days earlier, but she couldn't see where it was now.

She asked me to wait for a moment and put me on hold. Two minutes later she came back and told me not to worry. The parcel was at the local post office, she said, and it would be delivered the next day. She also asked me to check my spam folder, because they had sent me a tracking number.

I checked. She was right: the email was there, with the tracking number and a message that said my parcel was on its way.
