"I am tired." He said he was tired.
"I work in a bank." She said she worked in a bank.
"I'm waiting for a bus." He said he was waiting for a bus.
"I've finished." She said she had finished.
"I lost my keys." He said he had lost his keys.
"I'll call you." She said she would call me.
"I can help." He said he could help.
"I must go." She said she had to go.
"We may be late." They said they might be late.

Past Perfect, would, could, should och might förskjuts inte: längre bakåt kan de inte komma. "I had finished" → She said she had finished.

"I lost my keys" → He said he had lost his keys — så enligt regeln, och så är det säkrast i skrift. Men Past Simple står ofta kvar i återgivningen: He said he lost his keys. Särskilt ofta när tiden är nämnd: She said she arrived on Monday.

i direkt tal i återgivningen
now then
today that day
tomorrow the next day
yesterday the day before
next week the following week
here there

Samma dag behöver de inte ändras: She said she'd call me tomorrow — om i morgon ännu inte har kommit.

Fråga: rak ordföljd och if. Svenskan gör likadant i bisatsen: ”Var bor du?” → ”Han frågade var jag bodde”. Frågan inleds med asked eller wanted to know.

direkt fråga återgiven
"Where do you live?" He asked me where I lived.
"What time does the train leave?" She asked what time the train left.
"Are you coming?" He asked if I was coming.
"Have you seen my keys?" She asked whether I had seen her keys.

En fråga med where, what, why behåller det ordet. En fråga utan ett sådant ord — en ja/nej-fråga — får if eller whether, det är svenskans ”om”.

Uppmaning och instruktion: to + verb. Nekande — not to.

direkt tal återgivet
"Please wait here." She asked me to wait there.
"Close the door." He told me to close the door.
"Don't be late." She told us not to be late.
"Could you help me?" He asked me to help him.

Could you…? är en fråga till formen men en uppmaning till innehållet, och därför återges den med asked me to.

Jämför asked me to och asked me if:

He asked me to call Anna. Bad mig: ”Ring Anna”.
He asked me if I had called Anna. Frågade: ”Har du ringt Anna?”

Efter to kommer en uppmaning, efter if — en fråga.

Så säger man inte. ✗ She asked if I was coming? → ✓ She asked if I was coming.

Hur återger man Annas ord "I've lost my phone"? Varför She asked where I lived och inte where did I live? Hur återger man "Don't touch it!"?

visa svaren
Anna said she had lost her phone; i en återgiven fråga är ordföljden rak och did saknas — du frågar ju inte, du berättar om frågan; He told me not to touch it — not to + verb.

Vanliga fel hos svensktalande

skriven för ditt språk
1

”Inte” före verbet i bisatsen

”Hon sa att hon inte kunde komma” → ✗ She said that she not could come → ✓ She said that she couldn't come; ✗ He asked why I not had called → ✓ He asked why I hadn't called.

2

”Bad mig vänta” utan to

✗ She asked me wait outside

✓ She asked me to wait outside

Efter ”be” klarar sig svenskan utan ”att”, men efter asked me och told me behövs to. En instruktion — ”sa åt mig att vänta” — återges med told me to.

3

told utan person

”Han berättade att han var upptagen” → ✗ He told that he was busy → ✓ He told me that he was busy / He said that he was busy.

4

She said she would call me. She said she should call me betyder något annat: ”hon sa att hon borde ringa”.

Uttal

3 min

I en återgiven fråga är intonationen fallande:

He asked where I lived ↘. She asked if I was coming ↘.

that i återgivningen är obetonat: He said that he was tired — /ðət/, nästan omärkligt.

Text

Yesterday I rang the shop about my missing order. The receptionist said that the manager was in a meeting and asked if I wanted to leave a message. I told her that I had sent two emails the week before and that nobody had answered.

She said she was very sorry and asked me what my order number was. Then she asked whether I had paid by card or by bank transfer. I told her that I had paid by card on the first of the month. She said the parcel had left the warehouse ten days earlier, but she couldn't see where it was now.

She asked me to wait for a moment and put me on hold. Two minutes later she came back and told me not to worry. The parcel was at the local post office, she said, and it would be delivered the next day. She also asked me to check my spam folder, because they had sent me a tracking number.

I checked. She was right: the email was there, with the tracking number and a message that said my parcel was on its way.
